Château Sainte-Sabine: Life in a Historic Burgundy Château Among Deer and Rolling Hills

Among the green hills of Auxois, about halfway between Dijon and Beaune, lies one of those Burgundy hotels worth changing your travel plans for. Château Sainte-Sabine is a genuine 16th-century château surrounded by a vast park, where deer wander among centuries-old trees and the windows offer an almost picture-perfect view of medieval Châteauneuf-en-Auxois. Today, Château Sainte-Sabine is a five-star hotel and a member of Relais & Châteaux, but what makes it special goes far beyond its star rating. It is a wonderfully intimate and quintessentially French place, where you hardly feel as though you are staying in a hotel at all. Instead, it feels more like being a guest at an old country estate – albeit one with an excellent restaurant and a swimming pool.

I had already been to Bressanone (once in 2018, and overall, I’ve visited South Tyrol about five times). However, during that first trip, I didn’t like the city much—or rather, I didn’t fully understand it and barely saw anything. I wrote about it here. This time, I chose Bressanone as my main base, staying in two hotels: Arthotel Lasserhaus and Badhaus. Both hotels are amazing, and you can explore them through my blog posts and Instagram (where there are plenty of videos). I wholeheartedly recommend both! One is modern, while the other is historic with antique furniture. Imagine starting your day with a delightful breakfast in a room with terrazzo tiles and Murano glass chandeliers and ending it in a private spa at Arthotel Lasserhaus. Isn’t that the epitome of luxury for any traveler? But let’s get back to the city itself.

My 2024 Year in Travel

January, February, March, April, and May I stayed in Minsk and didn’t travel anywhere. I had a wonderful time with my family, enjoyed the beautiful Belarusian landscapes, went snowboarding, and played golf. I also took many walks around the city, both alone and with friends. I spent a lot of time at the theater watching opera and ballet. 2024 became the year of opera discovery for me. During the winter and spring months, I watched and listened to: Carmen, La Traviata, The Flying Dutchman, The Illusion of Love, Figaro, and The Nutcracker.

The past month — or rather, the last 15 days—has been absolutely crazy, let me tell you. Montenegro, Croatia, Provence, Burgundy, Paris, Switzerland, and now here we are in Italy… in my favorite region, South Tyrol. We’ve come here to “catch our breath” and enjoy the sunny days of late autumn. But I’ll save that story for another time. Today, I want to share an incredible find with you: a modern hotel that you’d never expect to discover amidst the streets of a medieval town—and one you wouldn’t even notice unless you turned down the right alley. The Badhaus Hotel and Viertel Bar are located in Brixen (Bressanone), a place I visited six years ago. This time, however, I had the pleasure of rediscovering it from an entirely new perspective.
